The site is located in Glounthane Co. Cork on a high site overlooking the harbor.
The existing house was built in the 90s and suffered from poor construction.
Energy upgrade was carried out and an extension that met the requirements for exempted development. The design was a collection of 3 boxy forms at proportionally diverse heights and widths to add interest and reflect the uses internally. The living kitchen was wider and higher than the dining area which was lower and narrower.
The black colour was chosen to camouflage the building into the hillside and allow for a deep contrast in colour between the interior and outside to add contrast with the existing ordinary existing 2 storey house.
